We would like to introduce you to Rowena Ravenclaw the raven who has recently joined the family here at Colchester Zoo!
The new arrival came from a private collection after being hand reared; as a result of this she is extremely friendly, inquisitive and keen to meet new people. Rowena has already made a close bond with her new keepers.
Once she is settled, it is hoped that she will join the falconry team at the Wild Displays where visitors can enjoy seeing a host of birds and small mammals up close and learn more about them.
The raven is bigger than a buzzard and is the largest passerine (perching) bird in Europe. Their glossy plumage is entirely black with green and lilac sheens. Ravens are well known for their intelligence; they are very playful birds and have been seen to perform mid-air acrobatics.
Ravens have been persecuted for a number of years by those keeping livestock despite being legally protected, they also face threats from collisions and overhead cables.
