binturong-halfOn 1st October a female binturong arrived at Colchester Zoo from the Czech Republic! Our new arrival is called Cecilka but has already gained herself the nickname ‘Bear’ from her keepers due to her size as she is quite a bit larger than our two resident binturongs, male Orson and other female, Very.

Cecilka spent her first few days settling in and getting to know the inside area of her enclosure before keepers felt she was settled enough to venture outside! ‘Bear’ has already proved to be a keen climber, enjoying the beams, trees and high poles in her new home.

Whilst she continues to gain confidence in the keepers and her new environment she will be kept separate from our two other binturongs.

We’re sure it won’t be long before this trio can be seen happily exploring together! Watch this space for more updates!

Did you know!? Binturongs are one of only two carnivores with a prehensile tail which they use as an extra hand, moving slowly, but efficiently through the trees.
