HELLO! WELCOME TO COLCHESTER ZOO
There's always a new story to tell at Colchester Zoo, from welcoming new arrivals, to exciting things to see and discover.
When neighbours become good friends!
Kifaru our young male rhino has been busy getting to know his neighbours!
Having previously met the rest of our rhino crash keepers felt Kifaru was ready to meet some of the other African species which share his home and so for the past few weeks he has been spending time getting to know our kudu, zebra, ostrich and crowned cranes!
Kifaru is a very energetic calf and enjoys playing with the younger members of the crash, Astrid and Mabaso! He can be seen outside in our main paddock on alternate days to our giraffe who are the final Kingdom of the Wild residents he is yet to meet!
It won’t be long now until Kifaru is big enough to be introduced to the giraffe so watch this space!
Emily gave birth to Kifaru on the 3rd February 2017 and his keepers selected his name as it translates to rhinoceros in Swahili! You can find out more about the birth of Kifaru here.

The white rhino is listed as near threatened on the IUCN red list. Due to the current poaching crisis this birth is vital to the survival of this species and Colchester Zoo is proud to be part of conserving this magnificent mammal.
Kifaru is now also available for adoption! Check out our fantastic adoption packages and find out how you can adopt our calf here.
Colchester Zoo’s charitable arm, Action for the Wild, supports a Rhino conservation project in the wild. To find out more or to donate please visit www.actionforthewild.org
