On Saturday 5th July two female Kirk’s Dik-dik, Aluna and Dalila arrived from Chester Zoo to be mixed with our resident male, Sien. These two new arrivals were both born at Chester Zoo during 2013 and come with a breeding recommendation so it is hoped that we may have some young in the near future!

The Dik-dik is one of the smallest members of the antelope family measuring just 80cm in length. Males such as Sien are easily distinguished from the females as they have horns which can grow to 11 cm in length. This small antelope also has a distinctive nose, which can be moved around and is slightly forked to help with browsing.  This is particularly important for the Dik-dik who does not need to drink as they get all the water they need from the plants they eat.

Our two new arrivals are settling in well and can be seen sharing their new home with our male, Sien and four Demoiselle cranes at ‘Edge of Africa’.
