Entrance-to-new-bearsSun bears Jo-Jo and Srey Ya moved into their new enclosure 'Bears of the Rising Sun' on Wednesday 19th March 2014. Both bears have settled in well and are enjoying their new surroundings.

The enclosure was officially opened on Saturday 29th March by TV Vet & patron to 'Free the Bears charity', Steve Leonard. This was a private event to honour 'Free the Bears' charity, supported by our charity, Action for the Wild. A cheque for £6,000 was passed to Matt Hunt from 'Free the Bears' to contribute towards the important work which they do for bears in the wild. To find out more please visit www.actionforthewild.org

Make sure you pay them a visit on your next trip and discover their new enclosure yourselves too!

A lot of time, money and thought went into this modern development, and also into making sure that our sun bears have a home suiting all of their physical and behavioural needs; providing an exciting and diverse habitat.

Jo-Jo and Srey Ya's indoor area consists of a waterfall and climbing frames for enrichment and now have a large outdoor area. Srey Ya was quick to explore the new enclosure with Jo-Jo following behind taking his time to discover his exciting new home. Both the indoor and outdoor areas for our sun bears have public viewing areas, but Jo-Jo and Srey Ya also have the opportunity to retire to their own private, off show, sleeping quarters.

Both bears were confiscated by Government Anti-Poaching Patrols in Cambodia in 2007 and 2008 respectively, with Srey Ya found in a village, weighing just 300 grams so young she had not yet opened her eyes when she was confiscated and also suffering from pneumonia. Jo-Jo was rescued from a bar where he was being kept as a pet to amuse visitors at just 6 months old.
