On Friday 5th and Saturday 6th September, staff and volunteers took part in this year’s BIAZA BioBlitz!white-mouse

The BioBlitz was conducted on the zoos nature area, and the survey included sightings of amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals, insects and plants.

Moth and Bat surveys were carried out on Friday evening with the help from Colchester Natural History Society and Essex Bat Group.

On Saturday, the British Trust for Ornithology joined us and helped with bird identification and conducted bird ringing demos; over 100 birds were rung throughout the day including blue tits, great tits, wrens and even a Tree Creeper!    pond-dipping

Public ponding dipping also took place on Saturday with some interesting finds including newt poles and a Great diving beetle.

The final figures are in for this years BioBlitz count at Colchester Zoo! In total 346 different species were discovered on the nature area within 24 hours!  That beats last years total by 47 species! A big thanks to all the staff, volunteers and visitors who helped us reach this fantastic total!
