chick in circle

Colchester Zoo are excited to announce the hatching of 2 healthy Crowned Crane chicks.

Mum Camilla and Dad Charles are being very attentive to the chicks who can be seen exploring their home at the Edge of Africa.

Crowned cranes are known for the distinctive crest of golden feathers which sit on top of their head and a bright red chicks gular pouch that hangs from their throat. They stand at over a metre tall, with males
being marginally larger than females but are otherwise indistinguishable.

Crowned cranes are currently listed as endangered on the IUCN red list; so these 2 new arrivals are fantastic news for their species.

Why not see if you can spot our new chicks down at the Edge of Africa on your next visit.
