On the 22nd November 2017, we welcomed a zebra stallion to Colchester Zoo from Denmark who has since been named Ziggy by his new keepers.

After spending a few days settling into his new surrounding, Ziggt was successfully introduced to the rest of the zebra herd made up of 3 females.  Since then he has also been spending time getting to know the rest of the African Species he shares his home with and has been happily grazing in the main paddock with them.

Ziggy joined us at 4 years old and it is hoped he may go on to be a breeding male in the near future when he is old enough.

The Maneless zebra is a variotype of the Grants zebra which is a subspecies of the Plains zebra.

All Zebras are known for their very good eyesight and are highly sociable animals often associated with wildebeest especially during the migration season.  Zebras live in groups consisting of a male and a harem of females.  There are close bonds between the harem which are strengthened by mutual grooming and other social activities.

See our latest arrival and his new neighbours at the Kingdom of Wild paddock.
