On the 7th of June, exactly a year and a day after welcoming their last chick, our Victoria crowned pigeon pair successfully hatched another who has been confirmed as female.

The new arrival joins mum, Violet and dad, Ozzy in the aviary at Penguin Shores!

Although the new arrival is still smaller than its parents, the growth rate of these birds, with the full attention of the parents, can be quite rapid so our latest arrival has already begun to fledge the nest!

The IUCN red list states these birds as ‘near threatened’ with the population in decline. This is mainly due to habitat loss because of logging and oil palm plantations. It is hoped that our pair will continue to breed successfully and help maintain the population of this species within the captive environment.

The aviary currently has a restricted view to give the young chick some privacy as it begins to venture out of the nest but you can still stop by the family’s aviary and see if you will be lucky enough can catch a glimpse of the new arrival!
