How to make a bird cake
Make this quick and easy cake to attract wild birds into your garden and give them a tasty treat!
What you will need:
- Yoghurt pots
- String
- Knife
- Mixing bowl
- Lard or suet
- Bird seed
- Stick or bamboo (double the length of your pot to use as a perch)
When to do it: Year round but especially in the winter months.
Time: Approximately 20-30 minutes, plus time to set.
How to make it:
Step 1
Carefully make a small hole in the bottom of a yoghurt pot.
Step 2
Thread string through the hole and tie the string around the centre of the stick/bamboo. (REMEMBER to leave enough string so that you can tie the pot to a tree or bird table)
Step 3
Allow the lard to warm up to room temperature. DO NOT MELT IT, then cut the lard into small pieces and put in the mixing bowl.
Step 4
Add all the other ingredients you have chosen to the bowl and mix them together with your hands. Keep adding the ingredients and squidging it until the fat holds it all together.
Step 5
Fill your yoghurt pots with the bird cake mixture and put them in the fridge to set for an hour or so.
Step 6
Hang your bird cakes from trees or your bird table and watch the birds eat their new tasty treat!
