Butterfly Glade

Butterfly NEW 2017 half width

The Butterfly Glade walk through exhibit which opened in March 2015 is dedicated to the loving memory of a very special little girl, Isobel Rose Parmenter. She passed away on 5th October 2014 aged just 22 months from the extremely rare condition Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (LCH).

Her parents Michael and Suzanne are so proud of the fight for life Isobel displayed and wanted something special and permanent to commemorate their beautiful daughter's life. The Zoo was the one place Isobel managed to visit on several occasions in her short life and her parents wanted to keep those special memories alive with something extra special here therefore with the help of family and friends, they are able to dedicate this beautiful exhibit especially to her.

For further information on LCH and Histiocytosis visit Children's Cancer and Leukaemia Group (CCLG)  www.cclg.org.uk/Langerhans-Cell-Histiocytosis-LCH and http://www.histiouk.org/

Izzy, "A butterfly to remind us even though we are apart, your spirit is always with us, forever in our hearts".

Wilkin & Sons

Tiptree NEW 2017 Half widthHere at Colchester Zoo we are pleased to have a supportive relationship with Wilkin & Sons, Tiptree.

Our two sun bears Jo Jo and Srey-Ya have been lucky to receive donations of delicious honey from Tiptree Jam Factory, owned by Wilkin & Sons, and this has provided them with enrichment for a number of years and proves to be one of their favourite treats!

Wilkin & Sons also offers further support by adopting Jo Jo and Srey-Ya in their home 'Bears of the Rising Sun'. Both of the bears cared for here at Colchester Zoo were confiscated by Government Anti-Poaching Patrols in Cambodia by Free the Bears in 2007 and 2008 respectively. To find out more about our Sun Bears and their home click here.

Ian Thurgood, managing director of Wilkin & Sons Ltd says "Colchester Zoo is an important local attraction encouraging families and school children to have a greater understanding of the world of animals, the story of the Sun bears Jo Jo and Srey-Ya is a great example of international teams working together to overcome huge obstacles to rescue animals."

Olympus

Olympus kindly donated enrichment activities to our two sun bears Jo-Jo and Srey Ya. Olympus KeyMed strives to play an integral role in helping people around the world lead safer, healthier and more fulfilling lives and, in addition to offering knowledge, expertise and world renowned products, the company actively supports a number of local, regional and global social causes to better the world.

As part of it's Environmental Improvement Plan, Olympus KeyMed has empowered a number of working groups, made up of a cross section of enthusiastic employees, to focus on particular environmental aspects.  One of these groups is the Ecology Working Group.  Originally set up to minimise the company's impact on the site's ecology, the group has now looked to increase Olympus KeyMed's involvement with off-site conservation groups at a local, regional and global level - e.g. Essex Wildlife Trust, Colchester Zoo and the WWF.
