bruce-smallOur young penguin has been confirmed as male and his keepers have given him the name Bruce, in keeping with the Australian theme of his father's name, Boomerang. As it is not possible to tell whether penguin chicks are male or a female without sending off a feather sample to look at its DNA, keepers had been eagerly awaiting the news before naming our latest arrival.

Bruce hatched on the 22nd July to male penguin, Boomerang and female Tequila who became parents again for the 3rd time! Penguins lay 1 to 2 eggs in burrows over 2-3 days. They take 40 days to hatch, after being incubated by both parents.

He hatched in Boomerang and Tequila’s nest at Penguin Shores and has since fledged the nest and moved to join our second group of penguins at the Inca Trail. Bruce has now lost most of his juvinielle feathers and is developing his adult markings but you can still spot him amongst his new neighbours!

Did you know?! Not all species of penguin live in the coldest parts of the world, for example the Humboldt penguin comes from Peru.Check out this video which shows the progress of the new arrival as it continues to grow!
