It’s not just the furry animals who have been welcoming young recently, our tail-less whip scorpions have also bred and we now have a number of these unusual scorpions!

Currently off show these baby scorpions are spider-like in appearance and as the name suggests, they are also lacking the usual scorpion tail! The young scorpions are currently much smaller than the adults but they are dark brown in colour making them perfectly camouflaged for their environment.

Despite being part of the arachnid family they only use 6 of their 8 legs to walk on and instead have adapted to use the front pair as sensors, letting these long feelers lead the way when moving in the dark and small spaces in which they live.

Our young tail-less whip scorpions are currently of show in an incubation room as they continue to grow but you can see our adults at one of the tanks in our Discovery Centre.
