kudufornewsOn 20th March a female and a male Greater Kudu arrived from Marwell Zoo to join our two resident females, Grace and Kumu, in the Kingdom of the Wild Paddock.

The two new arrivals have been named Gemma and Cedric by their keepers and it is clear who is who by their appearance! Male Kudus are a fawn grey whilst females are a tinge of cinnamon. Our new male is also much larger than the females and has a full set of long spiral horns which is a very new and exciting sight in the enclosure!

This newly formed herd will continue to live alongside a variety of other animals in the Kingdom of Wild Paddock recreating the savannah environment. They live on a diet of fruit, vegetables, pellets and hay.

These beautiful animals come from the antelope family and are classified as Least Concern on the IUCN red list meaning their current population is stable and continuing to thrive within protected and private land in Southern Africa. One example of this can be seen at Colchester Zoo’s UmPhafa reserve with approximately 150 Greater Kudu living on the reserve and 85 being translocated with a hope for continued success.

You can visit Gemma, Cedric and the rest of the new herd in the Kingdom of Wild paddock.
