We are pleased to report the success of breeding our Blue Dart Frogs for the first time!

Our breeding pair of Blue Dart frogs, which can be seen in the Discovery Centre, have successfully bred and produced fertile batches of spawn!

We have one froglet which still has some growing to do but has fully developed its legs and which hatched on 1st June 2013, the froglet has some growing to do but is . The other eggs hatched from the 10th July to the 10th August resulting in a further 10 tadpoles! They are all in different stages of development from tiny tadpoles to larger tadpoles that have started to develop their legs and losing their tail! Once the tadpoles have fully developed into a froglet their markings and colourings appear.

Blue Dart Frogs are also known as the Dyeing Poison Frog. Their range is the lowland forests of the Guianas and adjacent parts of Brazil. They live on the forest floor of tropical rainforests, under rocks near streams, but can sometimes be found up in the trees.

They are listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List due to their wide distribution; however they are illegally collected for the pet trade which could cause a threat to them in the future, along with habitat loss.

The young froglet and tadpoles are currently off show but their parents can be seen in the Discovery Centre.
