Mabaso trainingOn the morning of the 2nd May we said goodbye to our white rhino Mabaso who has now moved to Flamingo Land to join a new crash.

Mabaso was born at Colchester Zoo in July 2014 and at nearly 3 years old he is now ready for a new adventure as he moves on to form a bachelor herd and then when old enough will hopefully go on to become a breeding male and help in the growth of his own endangered species.

He was given the name ‘Mabaso’, after the head game keeper at Colchester Zoo’s UmPhafa Reserve, Siboniso Michael Mabaso, who sadly passed away not long before our calf was born. ‘Michael’ as he was known on the reserve, had been a part of the UmPhafa project since its start and so it is with great pleasure that we named our young male rhino in memory of him.

During the last few weeks of his time at Colchester Zoo, Mabaso had been taking part in daily training to get him used to the crate in which he would be travelling to his new home, he took to this extremely well and happily walked into the crate for his journey ahead.

We wish Mabaso the best of luck in his new home and hope to hear news of his own young in years to come!
