HELLO! WELCOME TO COLCHESTER ZOO
ZOO NEWS
There's always a new story to tell at Colchester Zoo, from welcoming new arrivals, to exciting things to see and discover.
Mandrills Suki and Gismo become first time parents!
On Sunday 10th September, Mandrills Suki and Gismo became first time parents as Suki gave birth to a healthy baby boy!
This is Suki’s first off-spring and she has taken to motherhood extremely well providing the tender loving care which is vital for the youngster during its first few weeks of life. As the baby gets stronger he will gradually begin to explore his home but always within a close proximity of Suki. Mandrill babies, similar to many primate young, cling to their mums when they are first born until they are strong enough to become independent. Gismo has been watching Suki care for their new baby boy from a distance!
Our dedicated keepers are still to name the new arrival so any name suggestions are most welcome!
Colchester Zoo is home to the largest Mandrill group in Europe! The Mandrill is the biggest monkey in the world and the most distinctive with their extremely colourful faces and a bright red behind!
Their status in the wild is currently listed as vulnerable so Suki’s new arrival is a welcomed addition to the population of their species and to Colchester Zoo!
Visit our Mandrills on your next visit down at the Edge of Africa and see if you can spot the youngster.
