Since introducing our two groups of female spider monkeys to create one large group, the vacant enclosure at Inca Trail is undergoing some refurbishments to be turned into a brand new area to house our second group of squirrel monkeys who are currently off show.

The group consists of 10 members and unlike the spider monkey their tail is not capable of gripping, however it is longer than their bodies, reaching up to 40 cm in length compared to their small bodies which only measure up to 30cm; this helps to balance the monkey when moving through the trees.

The revamped enclosure will give visitors the chance to see our second group of squirrel monkeys as well as providing the group with an excellent space full of opportunities to engage in a range of behaviours that will ultimately improve upon their general welfare as well as giving the squirrel monkeys full range to enjoy their new home.

The common squirrel monkey is currently listed as Least Concern on the IUCN red list as they are wide-ranging throughout the northern Amazon, however there are still some areas where they are often caught and sold for the pet trade.
