We have welcomed a young Red River Hog piglet to our group of 9 red river hogs, bringing the total number to 10!

The piglet was born to mum, Nikita, on 24th May 2014. Mum and piglet are healthy and well, they do have access to their off-show house whilst the piglet is young but have been venturing out into their main enclosure at Edge of Africa.

The red river hog is listed as least concern on the IUCN Red List and can be found within a large patchy distribution across the West and Central African rainforest. Favouring forest, savannah thickets, bush and swamp habitats, the main threats to this species lie in hunting; for both bush meat and as an agricultural pest (the species can assist in the spread of livestock diseases.)

NB. Photo is of previous piglet.
