HELLO! WELCOME TO COLCHESTER ZOO
There's always a new story to tell at Colchester Zoo, from welcoming new arrivals, to exciting things to see and discover.
Action for the Wild announces support of conservation projects for 2017!
Since 2004, Colchester Zoo’s charity Action for the Wild has supported a number of conservation and research projects around the world, and this fantastic work continues into 2017 with existing and new projects receiving support and funding from our charity.
This year, Action for the Wild will support 21 projects which help with the survival of some amazing species. Many of these projects are ones we have helped fund for a number of years including Colchester Zoo’s very own wildlife reserve in South Africa, UmPhafa. Funds will be used for to purchase a new vehicle for field ranger deployment, supplementing the prey population of impala and blesbok, as well as boosting the red hartebeest and bushbuck groups, plus provision of wages for field rangers and reserve maintenance staff, including the fencing team to rock pack the fence for cheetah release at the end of 2017.
Two new projects will receive funding in 2017. A donation of £5,000 will be donated to the Sumatran Orangutan Society to cut down 9,000 oil palms, covering an area the size of 75 football fields which has been illegally turned into oil palm plantations. Indigenous rainforest trees will be replanted, reclaiming vital habitat for orangutans and the countless other species that share their forest home. The other new project supported in 2017 is via a donation of £5,000 to Proyecto Washu to study the population density of Ecuador’s most endangered primate, the critically endangered brown-headed spider monkey in northwestern Manabì, Ecuador. The goal of this project is to initiate focused participatory community conservation by studying populations, identifying priority conservation areas and empowering communities to conserve these priority forests.
Watch this space throughout 2017 for updates on the fantastic work undertaken by all of our projects!
